I'd like to go back to school to get a degree in computers...?
-
I'd like to start going to a technical school or something to get a degree in something dealing with computers. I'm good with learning different programs and such but i don't know nearly as much as i should, I just don't even know where to start. I'm not really sure what I should get into. I want something that won't take to much time, and that has a decent salary. Could someone describe to me the difference between some of the different courses, or give me some suggestions?

Honestly, I think the best way to learn new stuff about computers in just to fiddle with them - if I were you, I wouldn't get a degree. But, if you think that would be good for you, then go for it =) It's just that I've found it really hard to learn about computer stuff from others - I prefer to just mess around until I figure something out.
You don't know me, but I hope you take my advice. I have many years experience in this field. I do have a bachelors in Information Technology. I have also take classes toward a Masters in the same. I've worked in IT for 20 years. Looking back, I wish I knew then what I know now. In a nutshell, regardless of your desire to earn a living in the computer field, you need to look at the future of the field itself. In the 90s you could not go wrong with getting any experience in the computer field and a degree was often a great entry point. As we neared the dot com era, you didn't need a degree or even much experience, everyone was getting in. Along the way we had NAFTA, two terms of Bush's who were 100% in favor of outsourcing jobs and global economics. Outsourcing of computer jobs became an easy way to appease stock holders and boards of directors. It never slowed down. What once was a massive technology market in America is now a very volatile dwindling market...particularly if you are a hands-on technologist. I personally moved into more of a managerial role a few years ago, so I have been able to avoid being outsourced. So, what does this mean for a young person wanting to start a career in the IT field? For now, get whatever you need to get your entry point. Get a job as a computer technician, a help desk operator, someone who updates Intranet content, whatever...start at the bottom. But do..please...gain business skills and learn how to broaden your horizons. Go as deeply technical you want or are able, but for your own sake, do not hinge your career on being a hands-on worker. You are a commodity in the IT world. ANYONE who does a daily routine in their job is an open target for having their job moved to India. The last thing you want is to be a 40 year old techie with a family and mortgage and then be told your wonderful accomplishments and vast career mean nothing since your job can be done for pennies in a third world country. The IT industry is not kind to middle aged out of work techies. Bottom line, don't view yourself or ever let anyone view you as a geek. Be a business person with deep technical skills. That will keep you employed. Good luck!
