Do Zip video files upload faster then regular files? How do I upload videos faster?
-
Hi, I am on a new Mac. I am uploading videos from my desktop to a file saver website. To upload quicker, I compressed a video into Zip format... But, when uploading I noticed that the MB were the same for the Zip file as the regular file. I thought a Zip file was meant to compress down the MB to make uploading faster... am I wrong? How do I get my videos to upload faster? Thank you for your help, Charnee

Answer:
The time it takes to upload or download a file doesn't depend on the format be it compressed or otherwise. It depends on the actual files size. In your case, as videos are generally in compressed format already, zipping it will not significantly decrease it's size. The transfer speed will still be the same but of course the time will be a bit shorter as the file size was decreased a bit also. One more thing, when you paid for premium service to transfer files at super high speed, make sure your internet subscription is able to support it. It would be dumb to pay for premium service that will allow you to download and upload videos to their site at say 15Mbps if your ISP subscription is only 5Mbps. What's the ideal speed you are getting from your ISP anyway? Test it here: http://speedtest.net/ If the average speed you are getting after a few tests is not close to what you are paying your ISP for then call them up so you can max out the premium service on the file server. EDIT: So it appears that you are paying your ISP for only 1Mbps speed. If your file server's Premium service allows you to upload and download files at higher speed then you are not going to attain it as you are capped by your ISP. The only perks you will be getting from the Premium service are perhaps additional storage space and maximum file size per upload. Some free online storage servers only allow 200MB limit per file even though they allow a big storage capacity like 25GB as what SkyDrive offers.

videos don't really compress that well so zipping them doesn't do anything. Only way to upload faster is to pay for a faster upload speed.
