How do you unzip a compressed file?

How do I unzip a compressed file (with windows vista)?

  • I downloaded some extra things for a computer game but they're all zipped, and when they're unzipped they are supposed to show up it the game. Do you know of any how-to videos or can someone give me a detailed walk through? oh, and some of them need to be opened with a program, what should i open them with?

    You should be able to right-click on the file and extract because a default zip handler is built into Windows. It won't open every file though and you may need to get something better. I recommend 7-Zip. 7-Zip is an open source file archiver with high compression ratio. 7-Zip has a strong community backing and unlike WinZip and WinRAR is completely free (contrary to popular belief WinRAR and WinZip are not free though you can download free trials).

After you unzip, see if theres an executible (anything ending with .exe) If that doesn't work, try 7-zip, winzip, or winrar. Or, it could be your internet connection. If your wireless, it could become corrupted during donwload. Lastly, Vista sucks *** for games, so that could be the problem.

You can use 7-zip http://www.7-zip.org/

it all depends on compression, otherwise, you should be able to right click on the compressed file and select "extract all". but like the other answerers, i recommend 7-zip. It is completely free, and it's compression is better and easier to do. :) if you need to uncompress a .rar file or something like that, you can download trials temperarily like i did, then just delete the trial until you need it again. Hope this helps! :)

WinZip trial (must pay for after 50 or so uses) and the freeware 7-zip.
