How do you record ppvs on to your computer?

My computer won't record sound!!!?

• Hello, I have a Gateway Windows 7 Home laptop with Intel Core i3-370M Processor, 4gb DDR3 memory, ATI Mobility Radeon 5650 1gb ( < I don't know if this information is helpful but just in case.) I bought it half a year ago. So my computer used to record sound perfectly fine and smooth, but one day I tried it and I got nothing. I thought the microphone was busted so I brought up another one. It had the same result. When I record, I get absolutely nothing, not even static. When I right click the speaker on the right hand side of the task bar next to the date, I press "Recording Devices". When I do so I see "Microphone - Realtek HD Audio - Default Device". I then tried the microphone with this box open, and the sound bar was rising to my voice, I said "hello" a couple times and noticed that the computer knows the microphone is there, and does know when I am speaking into it, and detects my voice volume with it's microphone detection bar, but will not record in recording programs. I've tried quite a few different recorders, I've tried "Sound Recorder", "Audacity", "GoldWave", all with the same result. I've seen a few other people ask a similar question online and the answers were such as "Your microphone is on mute?" and "Open Control Panel and raise the volume on your microphone" and ecetra, but none of those solutions have worked for me. This problem must be fixable because the computer still detects and knows my voice volume and everything, but the computer just won't record it. This is quite a unique problem because I've never noticed a problem like this on any other computer before. Any help whatsoever will be very helpful, as I am willing to try nearly anything because I need a microphone for things I do daily. Thank you for your help!!!
