How much can I make with A+ and Net+ Certification in the IT field?

A+ Certification for a job?

  • I have been working with computers my entire life, and I consider myself fairly well-equipped to handle all computer situations - hardware and software - across both Windows and Linux environments. I am currently in high school, and preparing for the future at the moment; While I have a passion for computers, IT is *not* the field I want to pursue for the rest of my life, as far as careers are concerned. However, I do need to find a way to make money and get a job that I enjoy to pay my way through life during college, and I feel that working on computer hardware, especially building and repairing computers, would be most ideal. Now, I don't have any previous professional job experience to reference to apply to a computer repair business, and I'm certain that telling a potential employer "I'm really good with 'em, though!" is not satisfactory. Because I want to get a rather entry-level job in IT soon, I'm considering getting CompTIA A+ certified. I can educate myself sufficiently enough to take the test, but it is an expensive test, and it's not my own money that I'll be using to pay for it. For that reason, I'm curious if A+ certification is necessarily a guarantee of entry-level employment - my ticket in the door, so to speak. If it ensures that I can get the proper employment to guarantee a better future, then clearly the price of the exams will pay themselves off, but I would like to hear others before I make the decision. My family doesn't have much money, so it's important that I make it count if I am to buy CompTIA certification exams.

  • Answer:

Work for a temp agency until you make the money needed for the exams and pay for them yourself, and then start applying for work as a computer tech.

It really depends on the market you will be working in. I begin my career as a tech for a retail chain and had zero experience or certs, I had only a good understanding of computers. I lived in a small town where there was not a lot of competition for tech positions. After moving to a larger city, I changed locations but still did a similar job. At this location I worked with a couple techs that had A+ certification as well as N+. Jobs like the Geek Squad or EasyTechs require an entry test that is similar (but MUCH easier) than the A+ certification. This is what you must pass to show your knowledge as well as a technology interview, they don't simply go off of your word. Regarding if it guarantees you a job, absolutely not. Those hiring often have zero knowledge of a tech's job (if you are working at retail computer locations), so an A+ would be worthless. If you are going through an HR rep, they will be up on the certs, but straight out of highschool you will be more likely to get a job at somewhere like Best Buy or STAPLES repairing computers, other businesses want experience with certs. Hope that helps, good luck.

It is one of the key positive factors that will be considered in the hiring decision, but it is by no means a guarantee of employment.

The CompTIA A+ certification is the most widely held by professionals in the IT industry. While it is true that earning it, or any other certification, cannot guarantee you a job, it will separate your resume from those without it. Many firms are now using software to help them review hundreds of resumes at a time, looking for certain key elements they think are important in a candidate. The A+ certification is among the most desirable, and frequently required, for positions like desktop support, remote support, Geek Squad and other entry level IT positions. What's more, you are likely to find that what you learn in preparing for the A+ will serve you in whatever career path you finally choose.
