I bought a crashed computer that originally had Vista on it. I bought and installed a new hard drive, but it wouldnt let me install windows xp, said "set up could not find a hard drive." So I installed Ubuntu 11.10 on in, and it still wont allow me to install xp. Still says no hard drive. So how do I install xp on this machine?

Why XP? It's dead OS. If the computer ran Vista it will run Windows 7. For legal copy of XP are not for sale in any store. For legal copy you will have to search eBay or Amazon for copy with unused key. For few dollars more you can purchase a copy Windows 7 Home with a key. You can order from MS or your local store. How are you installing XP? Booting from the CD drive, follow the instructions to install XP, including setting up the hard drive for XP install. To install Windows XP to a new hard disk, follow these steps: 1.) Start your computer from the Windows XP CD (or boot disks). To do this, insert the Windows XP CD into your CD or DVD drive, and then restart your computer. 2.) When the "Press any key to boot from CD" message appears on the screen, press any key to start the computer from the Windows XP CD. 3.) At the Welcome to Setup screen, press ENTER to begin Windows XP Setup. 4.) Read the Microsoft Software License Terms, and then press F8. 5.)When you are prompted for the Windows XP CD, insert your Windows XP CD. 6.) Restart your computer. 7.) When you see the "Press any key to boot from CD" message, press any key to start the computer from the Windows XP CD. 8.) At the Welcome to Setup screen, press ENTER to start Windows XP Setup. 9.) Follow the instructions on the screen to select and format a partition where you want to install Windows XP. 10.) Follow the instructions on the screen to complete Windows XP Setup. If you have successfully installed Windows XP, you are finish.

you should try some hard disk utility to format under FAT32 or load the driver of the hard disk in the floppy disk when xp starts setup its demand for additional drivers if you have tell the OS that Hard disk driver is on floppy disk

The XP installer does not include SATA disk drivers by default. You need to slipstream driver for your SATA controller into the install disk with some program like nlite. (Or copy the drivers onto a floppy disk and load during the install)

The DVD you are using to install XP is an OEM version from a different manufacturer. Get a different Windows disk.
