Java Q -- help please?
-
I have the following showing in Control Panel: Java 6 Update 7, Java 6 Update 16, Java 6 Update 18 and Java SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1. They show exactly in that order and my system uses Windows Vista Home Premium and numerous apps that call on Java. I am wondering if all of these are needed for Java to run? Can I uninstall the first two for gaining space on my hard drive or are all required for Java to function? I do NOT do Java programming, only writing in English -- blogging -- and Weather and sometimes other science work -- writing only. But I call up special viewing urls a lot, for weather. That is how I got the Java in the first place. No games at all, and no programming.

Answer:
The Java runtime platform typically tracks the updates released from Oracle/Sun for you. I wouldn't bother with it if you use a lot of scientific applications that depend on Java.
