Need help with burning video files to DVD......?

I need to find a free program that i can use to burn AVI video files to a DVD and play on my home dvd player. Every program that i have tried to use will not work, it keeps saying that the video file is not compatible and will not add the file to be burned......i need help! I have vista home premium and have downloaded Divx so i could see the videos i was downloaded from limewire. The programs i have tried that will not work is windows dvd maker, sothink dvd maker, and Roxio. Also i need a good program that will copy dvds, i do already have a dvdregion that removes the copy protection but when i try to use fancy dvd copy it keeps saying that the dvd is copy protected?? Any help will be appreciated!! Thanks!
