How to type chinese in my PC?

(PC 486 DOS 6.0): 'HARD DISK C: TYPE: ' "how can I find out my hard disk type?"?

  • When my PC boots up it states 'Missing operating system'. I haven't used it for 10 years, both my a: & c: drives were unistalled. I changed their settings in the BIOS SETUP PROGRAM (by pressing {DELETE} then {F1} while the computer was booting up), so they were installed, so my a: works again. But how do I know what value to type into the 'Hard Disk: type: '. How can I find out the HARD DISK TYPE? Is my 'Missing operating system' caused by this? I have the MS-DOS 6.0 start up disks, but disk 2 seems to be corrupted. Any advice please....

  • Answer:

You need to look at your HDD and get information off it about the sectors heads and cylinders and input that information in the BIOS if your hard drive is not automatically detected.

The "TYPE" statement isn't related to the type of hard drive, but to show in screen the content of some legacy text files. On the other hand, it would be good if you can attach a CD drive to the old computer, since you can reinstall the old MS-DOS system, or the free open source FreeDOS or finally the good old Windows 95 if the machine has some 4 MB of RAM and about 55 MB of hard disk space, and thus you'll have a graphical environment. Other possibilities are Damn Small Linux or any other ultra-lightweight distribuiton you may find suitable for such hardware.
