What are the different passes of a compiler?

If you know how to use Microsoft's HTML Help compiler, would you please help me?

• What software program should I use to create HTML files so they will work with the compiler? Do I use Notepad? Do I use Word? (If so, how do I get it to work? It didn't work the first time. Please see explanation below.) Or do I use Frontpage? And when I import these files into the Help compiler, should they be .HTM/.HTML or .TXT files? (You can tell I don't know anything about this!) What file extension will work? I don't know HTML (or Frontpage) but am trying to learn it...my boss expects me to figure out & learn whatever is necessary to get this online help file created. It has to be done very quickly so I'm looking for the fastest way to do it. I already failed once and lost lots of time in the process...I created my help files in Microsoft Word (they have lots of images with lots of wrapped text, etc., which I gather is complex to do with HTML) and then used Save As to convert them to .HTM files. But these .HTM files didn't work when I imported them into the Microsoft Help Compiler. So that's why I'm wondering just how to create these files so they WILL work in that compiler. Extra details, in case you care to know: Let me add: buying other software to get this done is not an option - there is no company $ allocated for that - I've got to work with the software I've got. And I did read some of Microsoft's documentation about their help compiler but I haven't found the answer to my question. I guess they expect their readers to know more than I do. =) Thank you so much for your help!
