(Mac Computer) Mail can receive mail but cannot send, and I cannot download Mac Leopard 10.6.1. Help?

I have a Mac computer, and Mail can recieve mail but cannont send. I went to the website, and it said that to fix the problem I just need to download Mac Leopard 10.6.1. But to download that version , I have to have Mac Leopard 10.6, which apparently I don't have. Help?

Answer:
Mac Leopard is 10.5 and the latest version is 10.5.8. Snow Leopard is 10.6 and the latest in 10.6.1 To know what you have click on the Apple icon on the top left then select About this Mac. To update to the latest version select Apple icon on the top left then select Software Update. If you have 10.5 and want to update to 10.6, you need to buy Snow Leopard from Apple, the update is $29
