Switch to Vista using restore disks from another computer?
-
My desktop is a Gateway on XP- and I've found since I got my Vista laptop I've stopped using it because of the small operating system difference. This has lead to my desktop being out of date and basically useless because I never turn it on except to print. I really want to restore it to factory settings but I don't have restore disks for that computer- I DO have them from my Vista laptop. All my files from both my laptop and desktop are backed up to an external drive. So- can I pop my restore disks from my Toshiba Vista laptop and do a system restore to it? Will that completely screw up my desktop? It's not an old computer- it's specs are about the same if not better than my newer laptop...but if I'm going to use it I'd much rather start with a clean slate on Vista than on XP. (plus this would save me ordering restore disks from Gateway!).

Answer:
I hate to be the one to tell you this, but that won't work except on a PC with VISTA already installed. They are not installation disks, but restore disks. The installation disk is built into a partition on your hard drive that is activated if you select to reinstall VISTA from scratch while booting up your system. I'm sorry about your XP, but you may just need to run through all the Updates from Microsoft. Good luck with that.

You can try this: 1. Put restore CD inside 2. Reboot your computer, it should say to boot from cd press any button 3. Follow onscreen instructions. Im not sure about it, so dont try this unless you completely backup all your files on comp. But I've done it before for Vista to XP, not vice versa
