What progam can I use to download emails from gmail? (for free?)?

I'm having great difficulty downloading emails from gmail onto my computer. The program that I tried using was Microsoft Outlook, but that program downloaded things that didn't need to be downloaded, such as emails that I had no interest in downloading. Can anyone give me the name or link top a program that can help me download emails from my gmail efficiently and quickly? I would appreciate it if the programs you list for me are free for download. Thank you!
