Can someone give me some sort of help / suggesstions computer booting problem.(connected to MS Win & Linux)?

  • Can someone give me some sort of help / suggesstions computer booting problem.(connected to MS Win & Linux) When I created Bootable Floppy disk / Flash drive, I can boot the computer from that. First it appears Microsoft Windows Millanium A:\> Or C:\> respectively according to the device. 1)After that how to access the hard disk? 2)How to execute particular exe file? etc... 3) What commands I can use? I only know 'dir', 'cd' 4) How I access to 'FDisk' fuctionality (to create partitions etc.) like in Win98? What kind of exe files do I need for 'FDisk'? 5) I have DSL (Damn Small Linux) in my Flash drive. How to execute it? Is it from 'boot' folder or 'kinoppix' folder? 6) If you know, Can you tell me how to install KNOPPIX to the hard-drive? (I have KNOPPIX_V5.11. It's 700MB. I can run it as Live CD but no way to install it to hard-drive.) Can you tell me? Regards.

  • Answer:

I assume these are bootable dos devices (floppy and flash drive). 1. If you get the C: prompt you already have access to the hard drive. Whatever commands you give will be performed on the hard drive. 2. To execute a particular file (exe) you will have to be in the directory where the file resides; either the file must be on the floppy/flash drive, or you must cd to the directory on the hard drive where the file is. E.G. cd My Documents and then file.exe to run a program named file.exe in My Documents. 3. Here are some links to a lot of dos commands. 4. To use fdisk you should have it on the floppy/flash. Fdisk is a self contained program to make/change partitions. (fdisk.exe) You should have a number of programs on this floppy/flash like format, copy, etc. The third link has instructions on how to create a boot disk. The fourth link has a lot of boot disks that you can download. 5. I am not sure how you flash drive is set up but there should be a command in the main directory of your drive that will execute DSL I would expect it would be in the knoppix folder. 6. It has been a long while since I've used the Knoppix live-cd but I remember there is a link somewhere if not on the desktop or in one of the drop down menus that says install to hard drive. The last link is for some DSL how tos. Good luck
