How to Create a file in "my documents" folder?

What is the best version control solution for a folder of a variety of file types like documents and pictures?

• Background: I am macosx Lion user and I often work with a folder with lots of word/pages documents including legal documents, business plan, contracts and even some jpg/png pictures needed for documents, all of these files may be edited or changed over time when necessary. And sometimes I also need to co-edit some of the files with my coworkers. I used to manually keep track of every version by duplicating file and add a date or version number into the file name then put all the historical files in a separate foler for each files. Over time it may become a mess and pretty difficult for me to keep track of all the version. Besides, it is taking too much time for do this manually. Question: I wondered if any version control guru here could provide me with the best version control solution that perfectly suits my need. Frankly, I have heard about svn and git, and some really neat client like corner stone, versions, and github, but I have never used any of these thing in person and can not find anyone nearby to provide some suggestion. Hopefully all the version control guru here could kindly enlighten me with a solution on which version control system to choose and which client software to go for, and any related tutorial or instructions, suggestions, warning will be greatly appreciated indeed to allow me quickly master version control.   Personally I prefer GIT for all sorts of projects. SVN would be the other solution I guess.
