MICROSOFT WORD 2003 PROBLEM (Complete details below)?
-
Last week I typed a short "to-do" list on Word-2003. I don't recall naming the document, but somehow, every time I go to create a NEW document, that old "To-do" list comes up. On the title bar, there is NO name for this to-do file, but if I delete everything on the to-do list and try to X-out, it asks if I want to save the changes at which point it named the document "11" (not "document #1...just the single number eleven (11) So I figure I just need to search for the document named "11" and delete it, but it is NOT showing in my list of documents. Could it be hidden somewhere because something became corrupt somehow?? And if so, how do I get that darn to-do list gone for good? Reboots don't work. Someone tried to help by suggesting to do the following, but I'm not sure if it's the right thing to do and if it is 100% SAFE. Here's what they said: --------------------------------------… Message: 1)Open Explorer, Click Organize (Tab on top to left of explorer window), Click Folder and search options, new window click View, on this screen you will see a list of options, click in circle in front of "Show hidden files, folders, and drives", Uncheck the box in front of "Hide protected operating system files(Recommended). Warning will pop up, click OK, click OK to close this window. Leave Explorer open, click on drive C, scroll down to Users, Double click on Users, Double Click on your ID, in my case "John", in this folder double click on AppData(if you did first part right you will see this folder), double click on Roaming, double click on Microsoft, scroll down to templates, double click on Templates, in this folder you will see normal.dotm, you can double click on the file to edit. See this web site: http://www.fanhow.com/knowhow:Repair_Normal.dotm_is_Missing_in_Word_32463018 and more information on this web site: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/word-help/change-the-normal-template-normal-dotm-HA010030756.aspx I troubleshoot problems like this all time, and I know if you damage the normal.dotm file, the only fix is to delete it and start over. I hope you understand my short hand and if you want more information just Google the normal.dotm repair or create. Web site to understand how to show hidden files: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/show-hidden-files-in-windows-7/ They show other way but the screen they show is same screen under Explorer. --------------------------------------… I'm almost 50 years old and never had this happen before. Thank you.

Answer:
Maybe, by accident, you have saved your "to do list" as the normal.dot document. That means that everytime you open up a new document, it will open that file (which should be an empty file). So next time you open a new document, delete everything, (as you have already been doing) and then save it as a normal.dot file. Or, you could just find and delete your "normal.dot" (or "normal.dotm") file and next time you open Word it will just make a new, empty one. Here are some links that appear to address the same problem: http://forums.computing.co.uk/showthread.php?t=219810 http://www.pcdon.com/word-unstable-corrupted-normal-dot.html http://resources.marshalladulteducation.org/techtips/techtip72.htm Good luck!
