Answer:
Installing Ubuntu as a dual-boot with Windows without partitioning https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Wubi I thoroughly recommend the Linux Mint 10 which is based upon Ubuntu 10.10 Its easy to use plus it comes with much of the software you are likely to need preinstalled Linux Mint 10 has a feature called mint4win which is almost identical Linux Mint 10 Download http://www.linuxmint.com/edition.php?id=67 Linux Mint 10 Release Notes/User Guide http://linuxmint.com/rel_julia.php You download the ISO. image of Linux Mint 10 then you need to create a Bootable LiveCD https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto Linux Mint 10 can also be run straight from the LiveCD without touching your Hard drive LUg.

Skip ubuntu and get Mint, it's easier to install and works better.

yes. because the files and images are in the windows section of the hard drive. what you should do is install ubuntu BESIDE windows so you can switch between the two. this way you can access windows when you need to and ubuntu when you need to just by doing a simple restart. heres a link to ubuntu. just run and select the highest possible hard disk storage size(or whatever you want) and install. then restart as it tells you to and you'll have ubuntu running alongside windows: http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/windows-installer

Yes, because as you say you are "replacing" Windows with Ubuntu. If you choose to format the entire drive, *everything* will be lost. Backup all the things you want to save just like you would if you were reinstalling Windows: music, videos, pictures, etc. You mentioned "Programs"...in general, Windows programs don't work in Linux, unless installed under a compatibility layer like WINE. Once Ubuntu is installed and updated, you can load all your files into your Home folder. As others here have mentioned, dual-booting is also an option.
eric k backup again
yes, because you would be reformating the drive will installing Ubuntu. You would want to back them up, and then copy them over into ubuntu (the easiest way)
