Video Format Problem?

I'm not sure if the title is inaccurate but I got a new webcam and when I capture a video using a program called AMCAP it claims that the video will be in AVI format however once it is recorded windows doesn't recognize the file it as a video it simply calls it a file, once I tell it to use windows media player the video works fine but is there a way I could get my computer to recognize this as a video file, this is causing problems like not being able to choose a default program and being unable to upload videos

you should get a video converter bacause AVI is a video format not recognized with WMP you could use windows movie maker or irfan view
