How to remove GNOME AND INSTALL AND USE KDE or XFCE on Debian GNU/Linux?

    It would not be very easy to remove gnome. It would be a lot easier to install the kde version of debian. This link has the kde version near the bottom of the list. Also near the bottom of the list is the xfce /lxde version. THe cd version is all you need for a basic install. THe dvd has a lot of software that you might or might not want. 99% the linux distro use the same few desktops (gnome, kde, xfce, lxde, fluxbox) and therefore look the same except for the wallpaper that you use. The differentiation is in the specialized software that some distros have e.g. games, education, multimedia, scientific, hacking. However most distros can also install all those specialized softwares if desired. Another difference is some distros like gentoo are source based which means that all the software has to be compiled before installing rather than using binary packages like debian.

Unless you have a philosophical reason for using Debian, you'd be doing yourself a favour by installing Ubuntu or Mint instead. Download Kubuntu, Xubuntu and Lubuntu or the corresponding Mint versions and see which one you like best. I use Lubuntu on my old laptop and it is pretty good. You could swap Debian desktops without reinstalling, but you'd be using nearly as much bandwidth as downloading a separate install disc for each flavour, and you'd be asking for trouble. Plus you can reuse the install discs as many times as you like, whereas the bandwidth you devoted to changing desktops in situ is only used the once. In what way are all Linux distros alike?
