How to create a one-variable data table with database functions in Excel 2007/2010?
-
I have a homework problem in excel that is asking me to create a one-variable table with database functions. There is a column listing categories A,B, & C. Then, another column listing salary averages of those in A,B, & C categories. A last column showing the hire date of each person. The only one-variable data table I've created before and that I see examples on are for housing payments (adjusting the APR to give different monthly payments). In the problem above, I am being asked to create a one-variable data table using database functions (ex: DCOUNT, DAVERAGE) to show the number of employees in each category (A,B,C); the average salary of employees in each of those categories (A,B,C); then the earliest hire date in each category. I can figure out the answer using database functions, but actually putting that into a one-variable table has me stumped. Any help would be appreciated! I can use Excel 2007 or 2010.

Answer:
The one variable and two variable data table usually apply to data with numeric ranges. A formula, for example may reference to 1 or 2 or more cells. One example is a payment amount table, one variable is the length of the loan (24, 36, 48 mths) vs fixed interest rates (2%, 4%, 6%). Obviously the monthly payment is highest to pay off a loan in the shortest time (24 months) and at the higher interest (6%). It is also called sensitivity analysis as the table should tell us whether it is compounding interests or length of repayments that has the greater impact. Your case is far simple, its a one data table. Like a bus fare table where the fares are shown for each bus stops further away. You can easily create one by having job category (A,B,C) on column A, and the average salary using DAverage() on column B, Your instructor may mean just that. But if you have already taken a class on how to use array formulas in a datatable, then it is time to open the chapter and follow it step by step. Google for it, use keywords like data table, sensitivity analysis etc.
