Build a Linux computer for creating music?
-
I am very seriously considering building a computer and installing UBUNTU STUDIO with the sole intention of making music for a career. The OS comes with a number of music programs. It would be a large investment for me both monetarily and time/commitment, and is intended for a long term musical career. Is it a good idea to switch over to Linux to accomplish this? and which would you advise and why - 32 or 64 bit? What should I know about the software and hardware i.e, will there be a lot of hardware problems with the sound and video cards? What components would you advise (and are UBUNTU compatible)? - I have been thinking of an AMD Phenom II X4 970 CPU and getting a Cooler Master Hyper TX3 Cooler to get rid of the heat Which sound card is going to give me the best quality production and most options for inputs etc... Which motherboard...? Which video card (have been thinking of NVidia)? Do you have any experience in the field I am looking to and have some advice? Any and all advice beyond the above question would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:
Run Ubuntu from CD on your current computer and see if it fits your needs. If it doesn't, you're only out 10 cents for the disk.

1 decide what aspect of musical career you will deal with. Generally artists tend to starve. Currently I'm building linux based systems for radio stations. They tend to get paid and their budget is less limited. Radio automation in a box can tilt the scale at 60 grand. The reason everyone is running to linux in the radio end is the OS can survive where the windows based system drops dead on a regular basis. Nvidia card is a good card but from the ubuntu end of things it requires user intervention to bring up all of it's features. From within Fedora there is no need for that. Hardware wise there is little problem that research can not solve there are vendors that support linux platforms but thier product is not cheap. Rightfully so because their stuff is not the aftermarket junk john Q public uses. No matter which way you go I suggest extensive research on your topic and lurk in the forum and see what is going on.
How much are you willing to pay? I came across an Excellent PC and Laptop that may interest you though they are a bit pricey (http://eracks.com/products/Studio ).
I'm no expert on studio programs, BUT...at this point I would stick with 32-bit myself. Definitely try 64-bit though in case it works well for you because it can take advantage of more RAM. I've never heard of a motherboard or CPU that wasn't compatible with Linux. You would only need liquid cooling if you are doing some HEAVY processing and overclocking. Like I said I'm no expert on the programs that music is created on but I can't see the computer having to work that hard to run them. I would stay away from NVIDIA for the video card. They don't like to release their hardware specs for drivers to be made. So there are drivers but they suck about 50% of the time. Hope I was at least SOME help.
Look up 'Eight Virtues' and 'System 76' to see what they put in their computers. I believe one of them favors the AMD. They build computers that come preloaded with Ubuntu or what ever Linux you may want. You can get an idea of whats compatible. One is in Georgia and the other in Colorado i think (USA) From what I have seen posted around...I think 32 bit will no trouble. 64 bit may have compatibility issues with some hardware.
Well if your going to be using Linux you don't necessarily need Ubuntu studio. I recommend that you just download Ubuntu (better then Ubuntu studio in my opinion) then for creating and mixing music you could get Mixxx and audicity (amazing dj and music software) if you check em out you'll love em. the reason i recommend this over Ubuntu studio is that Ubuntu is more used and if your just going to use if for music it would be better to run Ubuntu with those two programs.
