How to do references in Java work?

Java won't work on my computer, help!?

I initially didn't have java when I tried to play MineCraft and so I downloaded it and it says that I need to install the plug-in still. This is on Chrome 17 but Java won't work in IE9 or FireFox11. And I am also using the latest Java (Java 6 update 31) and have tried downloading 7 as well neither works so I Google the problem and I'm getting maybe JavaScript is disabled on my browser so I check and all are enabled so I check my which bit version of Java I had installed and it was 32-bit when I have a 64 bit computer so I thought that was my problem well I download 64-bit and nothing is resolved. So can someone please help?

I hate when this happens here are a couple things I would try and hopefully something works. Sometimes when you download it doesn't register on the computer until after it has been restarted, try restarting the computer. Go through your start menu and pull up Java and look through the settings to make sure all is correct. Also make sure to check the preferences in the browser you are using to make sure everything is ok.
