When you replace windows with ubuntu what does it do?

I need to wipe Windows off of my laptop, and replace it with Ubuntu. But there is a problem...?

  • The Windows XP that I run has become unbootable and nothing i have tried has worked as far as solving the Boot problem. I was just wondering if there was a shortcut where i could just install the Linux and then just clean the windows off, or if i was going to have to solve my boot problem first. If anyone can help me with the boot problem even that would be great. Its: windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: Windows\System32\Config\system

  • Answer:

Get the Ubuntu CD and boot from it. then just open the installer and format the Hard Drive.

You need to go into the bios settings and select the boot options. Select CD ROM to boot before the hard drive. Then you should be able to boot from the Ubuntu CD on startup. Ubuntu can overwrite XP so no need to reformat the hard drive.

go to a working computer download ubuntu than burn it to a cd than go back to the broken computer and overwrite the windows instalation with ubuntu

Boot into sfae mode if you can, stay there for about three minutes, then shut it down, wait a minute then reboot. Sometimes this will fix unknown issues because windows gets confused where files are located.

you could go into safe mode and do the system restore but if you want to install linux, then just use a start up disk, windows me or better, I would go for windows me and then just format the c drive and install your linux. You might need an external floppy drive or external disk drive, I've never done that with a laptop before

What Bob is saying is absolutely correct. You can boot from any (ubuntu, windows, etc) OS startup disk. But is this where you are having the problem? If so, it is likely because your BIOS has defaulted booting from the hard-drive. When you first boot up, there is a screen that flashes, it may be a list of several options, say "press F12 to enter BIOS" etc. That is what you need to do: enter the bios and change the boot from your hard drive to the cd rom. Your computer will then boot from the ubuntu disk and allow you to install.
