Answer:
for doing this, first make sure boot from CD is enabled. if that is not enabled press F4 frequently while starting PC. there you will find boot option and make it boot from CD. insert windows 7 cd before starting windows. then press any key frequently and new installation window will appear. by pressing next for a few times a window will appear for confirming in which drive you want to install. if you installed windows xp in C drive, press a button named "format". then xp will be formatted and you can select windows 7 to install in that drive. it would be better if you use 1GB RAM or more if you want to have the best from it. in 512 it will be little bit slow when you use many programs at a time

You can format the hard drive by popping in the windows 7 cd in the optical drive. Follow the instructions on the screen. Be sure to back up all your files. 512 mb of ram won't be enough. You should have at least 2 gb to run windows 7 nicely.

Windows 7's System Requirements say you need a minimum of 1GB. It will install fine with 512MB, but your computer is going to be really really slow. As far as installing it, you don't need to erase Windows XP. Installing Windows 7 will get rid of Windows XP for you. Just insert the Windows 7 disk and choose to boot off of the DVD (what button you press depends on what model of computer you have, but it's probably going to involve pressing one of the F buttons before the computer boots up). Just follow the instructions and choose a "Custom Install". It will move all your old Windows XP files into C:\Windows.old and then install a fresh copy of Windows 7. You can go into Windows.old and get any documents you want to keep, then just delete the whole folder.

You can format during the Windows 7 installation process. You don't need any Windows XP CD. You may have issues installing Windows 7 with that little RAM, though it will probably go in. Any of the extra features you paid for in Windows Ultimate like Bitlocker are going to be virtually worthless though. You should have put your money into more RAM or a new computer, instead.

Nothing to worry. Just boot from the Windows 7 DVD. It will do the formatting (quick or full) for you during the installation process. Meanwhile, if you are planning on installing Windows 7 on a 512MB computer then I suggest that you don't attempt it at all. Win 7 requires a minimum of 1GB to run. More would be better but not mandatory. I have two netbooks with only 1GB RAM. One has Win 7 Starter and the other has Win 7 Ultimate, if that helps.

The only Problem that will occur is that it will be Ridiculously slow, I have 2Gb RAM and my WIndows 7 is slow with very Few programs on it. I wouldn not think you would need to uninstall Xp just Shove the Disk for Win 7 (Not literally) in and install thats how i installed mine. Sincerely, kirkyzz
