A few weeks ago my system crashed, i formatted the hard drive, then put my vista disc in, however it doesnt work, and was wondering what if i could instead install a new Operating System, then remembered i had a copy of Ubuntu which i downloaded, i have tried Slitaz-Linux, but my MAIN PROBLEM WHICH I HOPE UBUNTU DOESNT DO, is that i cannot access my wireless interface as i have to install drivers etc, and it doesnt work, i was just wondering as my computer is 100% empty, if i install ubuntu i can then go wireless, that the info is included in the download ? IS ist possible to use wireless in Ubuntu, or will i have to use the Ethernet cable forever :)

Answer:
Yes a good mate of mine uses ubuntu as his primary os and he can easly pickup and connect to wifi spots. Not sure if u'll have to install the drivers... i'm guessing u would and being completely empty i'm not 100% sure no how to do this sorry. He already had them installed on his windows partition. But if u get the drivers installed it does connect to wireless easily and u shouldn't have a problem. Hope this answers ur question ubuntu is awesome... i don't use it as often as i would like cause i have all my work on windows but definitely give it a go with a bit of luck it'll work. Good luck mate.

Yes it is possible to use wireless in Ubuntu, but there is about a 80% chance your wireless card will just work right after install. So yes, most of the time in Ubuntu the wireless card will just work automatically, but once in a while some of them need a little configuration.
Ubuntu doesn't always automatically install Wireless cards, you might encounter the same problem. The best way to find out is to run the LiveCD. If you don't want to deal with installing drivers, you are probably better off with PCLinuxOS. By default it will support most Wireless/Graphic cards. Running the LiveCD you will be able to tell if your card is supported or not. http://www.pclinuxos.com/
I got my hands on an old tower to experiment with Ubuntu on. All that easy to use talk people say was not true for me. The tower just met the min requirements so that might have been the problem. I would say it could have been me but my friend, who is pretty tech savvy, had trouble too. The problem we had was configuring the wifi. We have a wifi signal but can not hard wire into the router. Took a week to find all the IP#'s and settings we needed to use. Even then we could not get past the router to get on the internet. I have since given up on it. If I had tried to use this on my laptop or the desktop I built about 6 months ago I would be steamed. It was just too much trouble for me. I might try it again because I would like to build a media center desktop to run on the TV. Figure I can piece one together for about $250, without an OS, if I can catch some sales and rebates. Saving $100 on the OS would be nice. Hope this helps. Good Luck.
Ubuntu comes with the drivers installed, unless your computer has very specific / non-mainstream wireless device. Though the main problem I had with Ubuntu is that sometimes it doesn't notify you when wireless networks are available. Check out www.omgubuntu.co.uk for more details and what not
