Is there any website where i can download ebooks for free?

I'm a masters student and i was wondering if there are any particular website from where i can download ebooks for free. I dont mind paying but i really havent come across any trust worthy site so if there are any. I'm asking this because there are no specific books that i need to refer to in most of my modules hence buying it would be a waste since i only need it for referencing. Also the fact that the books im looking for are most of the times borrowed by someone else in my uni's library. Thanks

Google books has a database of public domain books for free and available via PDF and ePub. Google books also have some books available for a limited preview. However for recent books with all the pages, try a library.

Amazon has a "Top 100 Bestsellers" list - a paid list and a free list. Check botho of those out. You can also filter free books by genre - clicking over to the desired genre of books and then selecting the "Price: Low to High" option.
In addition to Google Books, try gutenberg.org and manybooks.net.
