Would you convert from Java to PHP due to market demands ? Hello everyone, I'm a Junior Java web developer, I've been studying Java for a while, about 6 months or so, had OCJP & OCPJWCD in Java, I've been dreaming to land a decent job in Java, but now due to lack of Java vacancies, due to bad market and economy as well in my country, Egypt, due to revolution, many foreign corporations closed off and moved to other countries , others laid off employees, Now PHP developer are required more than Java developers, for it costs far cheaper than Java, for PHP developer salary is kinda low, should i be more down-to-earth that Java market won't come back again as before revolution and it might take some time, that I have to forget about Java for now and go into PHP and hit on the iron while It's burning, though I know nothing about it, but I could study hard and get the hang of it in a few weeks or so, because It's much more easier than Java by all means, since I know the basics of programming, I will need to study the syntax, I'm not saying that there will no difficulty, but it will be easy for people who have programming background, that it is . However Java developers hardly ever convert to PHP, but many PHP developers convert to Java, for Java is more decent programming language, however some PHP developers won't go along with what I'm saying here, especially experts, this is not a technically question anyway. On second thought I'm thinking hold on till Java market comes back and get any job away from Java now till java market here improves, in the meantime i will study much more stuff in Java, EJB and framework like JSF& Spring&Hibernate, and broaden my knowledge in Java . On the other hand, there are common technologies that most of programming languages use, JavaScript & JQuery & Ajax, and in case if i go into PHP and land a job in it, I will be able to get some experience under my belt in those technologies, that if i get back to Java again when Java market gets better, that will be very helpful to put at my resume, PHP might be helpful as well to put at my resume. Now I'm of two minds, please help me getting out of this dilemma, any advice would help, I really appreciate your time, thanks a lot .

Answer:
If you can support your life style (financially) without a job i would do both, study further in Java and PHP. But if you can't support your life style for very long i would suggest to try going into PHP until the java job market returns. If it appears java won't return at least you will have a income from PHP which gives the option to leave to another place with available jobs.

java is no longer used much on the web. If that is what you want to do, then go for PHP. java is more used in software (just think that a lot of mobile devices use variants of it...) but, in any case, it shouldn't be hard to switch from one language to another, especially from two which are both based on procedural paradigm structures, and, more especially, from a rich language like java to a more intuitive one like php...
