In java - how do you get a string to abbreivate words in the output?

when a user types in word or sentence the output of that word sentence would be abbreviated. E.g. 'today is friday' becomes 'tody is frday'

That's a bit random. You could just take out all the vowels in every word? Or a random letter from each word.
