What skills do I need to make a functional website?

  • I bought a few worthwhile domains in the past year or so, and its about time I do something with them. My first project is a website where people interested in a certain hobby can get news, chat with others (live-time group chat and forums), and contribute articles and amend articles wikipedia style. I want to have an optional membership, with each member having something like their own page under my domain. Also, and most importantly, I want to reference locations on google maps for good locations to buy products, and to illustrate meeting places for monthly meets and such. What essential skills are necessary to learn for an endeavor like this? I already know my way around Java and HTML, with a 30-day messaround trials-worth of DreamWeaver. So I am literate, but not savvy. What all do I need to learn, and what is the best way to go about learning the necessary steps to make the site mentioned? ' Any help is appreciated.

    You're going to have to decide on a hosting type. Unix or Windows. Then depending on that: Unix: PHP, MySQL, JavaScript, HTML, CSS Windows: SQL Server 2008, ASP.NET, VB.NET or C#, possibly Silverlight, JavaScript, HTML, CSS This is minimum. You may need more depending on how fancy you really want to get.
