The writing at the bottom of webpages that helps with with search engine optimization is called?

    I would call it keywords, but SEOs generally don't look at that anymore. SEOs look at a number of factors, one being how many other pages link to your website. Instead of piling a bunch of keywords, make sure your site follows a few basic rules: 1) Don't use flash 2) Make sure all text is actual text and not images 3) and just make sure you have GOOD content.

I think you are referring to people who place keywords and links in their footer. This is no longer considered an acceptable practice by Google and is often called "keyword stuffing". The Google Panda update has made many of these black hat seo techniques obsolete.
