How much to charge for web design?
-
I just graduated college in May with a degree is graphic design and photography. I have been unable to find a full time job so I have been freelancing for people that I know. I was just approached and asked to do a logo and website for a small consulting company. My web design knowledge is limited to HTML and CSS. I have created my own portfolio website and I feel it is pretty good. Because I have never created a website for someone else I am wondering what a fair rate or project fee would be for this kind of project? The website will have 6 pages including the home page. If someone could tell me a fair amount to charge that would be great. I am in the Chicago land area.

Answer:
Don't start too high you need to build your portfolio to a degree where you can start charging the big bucks. I would say anywhere from $15-$25/hr or you can give a bulk package deal.

As you are just starting out, focus on building a portfolio of good designs and happy clients. Be flexible with the pricing as a good job will give you more value than $$. You can charge a basic rate say $10-$15 per hour in exchange for a mention on the site at the bottom like 'designed by name' with a link back to your site. Also get a testimonial if client likes what you did and add a screenshot or two for your portfolio.

Congratulations on graduating. The world of a website designer is a pretty tough one to travel. I do not know what it is like in your area though there was an ad in the newspaper recently about website design. The ad stated that they'll make you a full website for about $500-$800. I personally make websites for around $300 though I go passed HTML and CSS. It seems to drum up more business this way. I hope this helps!

Lauren Price deoend on many factors, such as time take to understand their needs, how complex is the task etc 6 pages is just a number, as 1 page can sometime be more difficult that 3 or 4 If the site is static, then I would suggest something like $300-$400 if it will take say 6-8hrs as a whole project, you cant be too greedy, you need these guys to built your portfolio, so think of it like an investment. You may have a degree in graphics design (almost like me) and you could be teh most creative person on planet earth, but unless you have the ability to listen to the clients requirement in full and fine details, you will never have a happy client, what they have in mind and what you have in mind may share common ground, but trust me, its very very different unless you can fully understand what they want, check my other post for similiar post on web design and you get a better picture.
