How can I design a great blog for my mom?
-
Ok, so my mom has put all of her faith in me to make her a blog that looks absolutely perfect. Of course I am flattered but I am also scared to death that I am going to disappoint her. I am a first-year graphic design major in college and have been making things and winning contests in art since high school, but I am by no means close to being great yet. Both of my parents think the world of me and think I'm so talented and I cannot make them think otherwise! I don't really know how to design a blog though... Do I just make my own banner in Photoshop or Illustrator and tweak a pre-existing template to make it match together? Or can I reconstruct my own template using CSS/HTML? I have a little experience in the latter - at least enough to know my way around and do basic things. Also, it is going to be a food blog. My mom's a really good cook, so she wants to blog about her recipes and experiences in cooking. I am used to making things look really modern and up to date, but she told me that is the exact opposite of what she wants - just to make it harder! Any advice or help for me? What blog would be the best to do this in? She started it on Blogspot, but I'm wondering if Wordpress would be better...design wise at least. Just help me out!

Answer:
Wordpress is obviously a lot more customizable since you have access to the source, and you can screw around with every aspect of it. Blogspot also has a customizable style sheet, they both work fine.

In this case I would recommend starting with a generic template and use it as a starting place for the tweaks you want. Don't let yourself become too locked into a style. Saturate your mind in the kind of style she likes and let a good design come out of that. It can be hard, but if you want to do anything like that for a living this is a good opportunity to get out of your comfort zone and do some exploring. It can be fun. Personally I like WordPress, but any of the major systems are good.
Don't panic. You've already taken the first step. Talk to her about what she wants it to look like. Sit down with her and show her a few basic sketches of the site. After that, see what she liked and didn't like about each one. Take those and sketch a few blog pages based off of that which she ok'd. After that, all you have to do is take the one she liked and code it. See if she likes it then; if so, you're in business! Also, either way is fine with the Blogspot/Wordpress juxtaposition. Again, the trick is not to worry. Calm down; it will come to you.
