How to become a video game PROGRAMMER?
-
I keep hearing Computer science, But it doesn't teach about game engines and ect. Just C and OS's which is useless if you don't know how to use it in games. Your thoughts? And two more things. How does http://cs.wku.edu/newcs/ look? and are there any colleges that teach game programming and computer science? Thanks.

Answer:
You first learn computer programming. Then you learn a few programming languages. Then you learn game programming. You don't have the knowledge to learn game programming before you learn programming and a few programming languages. Colleges teach programming. What you do with it is your business. (It's like plumbing - no one teaches single story house plumbing, they teach plumbing. Then you decide if you want to work on houses, skyscrapers or ocean liners.)

Most every game is made with C++ coding. Sometimes it is Java. Learn those too and make simple things like Pong and or Tic Tac Toe. You should go too college for Game Desgining. A college i recommend is Full Sail University. They give up too masters degree in Game Desgining and top rated for it. Left 4 Dead Desginer went there! Oh yes too learn C++ buy the simple C++ For Dummies book.
I am going to do Computer Science and i want to make games, you should specialize with Java (This is common in CSC) or C++/C#, mostly game engines are THEORY and are developed by these programming language, if you would like a head start though i'd say start looking at java tutorial at: http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/index.html PS: Game Design and Game Programming are very different, Design deals more with the graphics themself and is strongly ART based, where Programming is strongly theory and are the backbone of games
These videos can teach you how to write simpler games. Very useful! http://xoax.net/comp/cpp/index.php
I teach game programming and computer science at a major university in Indiana. You really don't need a degree in game programming, but a degree in computer science. CS is a very general topic, but it gives you a broad overview of what computers can do and how to solve difficult problems with them. You will learn plenty of programming and probably a number of languages, but that stuff is all side effects. Learn how to think well. Learn about how programming works. Pick up a language or two, and learn how to program. We don't have a degree in game programming, but we have a bachelor's degree in CS with a concentration on gaming and 3D. That will probably serve you better in the long run. Send me a direct email aharris(at)cs.iupui.edu and I'll send you my contact information. I can talk about whether our program is right for you.
