Should I pursue programming as a career?
-
I want to get into a big project of learning programming. iOS Xcode development to be specific. I have some basic knowledge in programming with C++ and Java. However, a couple of issues are discouraging me. One, I have no idea how long it will take me to gain the experience necessary to start making a living. I can't afford to spend a whole year learning something which I may or may not benefit from, for example. Two, I am unsure whether it's the right thing for me. I have basic knowledge, I have all the tools, I have logic and creativity, and proven to be excellent in basic programming, and I have a lot of interest in software and UI design, but the one thing I don't have is passion and confidence (that's two, but whatever). I'd basically be forcing myself to learn. Maybe I will learn to like it, but I don't even know how long that would take if it happened at all. I've enjoyed basic programming, but when complex programming with libraries and whatnot got involved, I was turned off completely. So the question for experienced programmers of all kinds, how would you relate to me? Is it a good idea to try to pursue this unique opportunity despite my lack of interest in the core aspect of it?

Answer:
In my opinion it is wrong to be platform/language oriented you should be development oriented. If you like the idea of building new things and developing software of any kind then do it.. you can earn good money in the process. This career can be a very stressful one, and you definitely need passion to get over those moments. Regarding your issues: One: this model: learn stuff A and then find ways to make money out of stuff A doesn't work. My advice on this matter is try to make money with what you already know and take the most of that process and learn everything you can. There is a proverb in my country that sounds like this: if you can't make it with whatever faith has given you can't make it with all the things you consider necessary in order to make it. Two: you'll never know if it's the right thing four you unless you try it.

Confidence you can learn. It comes along with experience and familiarity. Something that seems dauntingly difficult right now might be practically intuitive after you've had some good practice with it. I remember the kinds of silly mistakes I used to make in Excel 4.0 and Javascript, and how frustrated I got trying to do things that are second nature to me now. The human mind is amazingly adaptable. That said, I don't think passion is something you can learn. If you don't actually LIKE programming, if it's always going to be boring for you whether you're good at it or not, then don't do it. I've heard testimony after testimony from people who have had careers spanning decades, and there's one thing they all seem to agree on: Find a job you like, because if you don't, you're going to spend the rest of your life regretting it.
heh, you shouldn't learn how to code just to do one specific thing. you should learn to code then do only what you find interesting once you've learned.
