What exactly does a software engineer/software programmer do?

Any Salary Differences? Programmer for Financial Firm vs Programmer for Software Company?

  • I was just wondering about something: Is there much of a difference in salary between being a developer for financial firms (writing stock software and algorithms) vs. working as a developer for software firms? You're both writing software right, just for different industries. Is one usually higher than the other? Anyone know the typical salaries of both? Assume the experience level for both is a BS in Computer Science, 1-3 years exp, C# and C++ knowledge.

  • Answer:

Yes, salaries do differ by industry. Financial software is one of the highest paying industries. If you work for a software development company, the pay depends on what kind of software they develop. Again, financial software is high paying. Enterprise software, like SAP, is also high paying. Pharmaceutical and medical software also pays well. Educational software and retail software pay less than these. Of course, the geographic location of the company also plays a part. A developer working for a company in their Boston office will be paid more than someone else doing the same job in their Pittsburgh office.
