SQL server is free and widely used infact even Microsoft uses SQL language so if you want a job somehow go with SQL but if you want a highly payable job go with Oracle cause Oracle developers are less and most of Oracle systems are used for multimillion dollar projects so obviously you can get a high salary also Oracle databases are mostly stable, reliable, and can hold lot of data without slow down the databases, it's not free but you can download their Oracle Database 10g Express Edition.

Probably Oracle is better on the high-end of things, since it's both scalable and platform-independent. OTOH, SQL Server is probably more widely used in smaller shops. It probably depends on what your goal is...if you're shooting for large-scale corporations, probably Oracle; if you're looking for smaller installations or plan to freelance, SQL Server.

If you learn one you can apply a lot of your knowledge to the other. Basic all basic SQL shares fundamentals. SQL is short for Structured Query Language; there are many flavors. Oracle and Microsoft are just two of many implementations. If look at SQL generically, then you will see that is on a lot of platforms. Are you asking which platform? eg. Microsoft vs. Oracle?
