How rich are web developers?

Do web developers need to know how to build and use databases and MySQL?

    Building the database may or may not be someone elses job. That will vary by company and/or by project. Using the database is the responsibility of the web developer. You can't get data if you do not know how to do so. Not knowing some version of SQL will limit you as a web developer and not many companies will hire you.

At the very least you need to know how to connect to them and manipulate the data, if you're even remotely serious about development. Databases are where all of your data is stored. Your site won't get much traffic if it has no content on it. Building the database itself may also be part of the job if you're a freelancer, or if you're on a small development team. Even if you don't have to do it all the time, it's still a good skill to have. The better you understand the database, the better you can write code to interact with the database.

You can't call yourself a "web developer" if you cannot use databases (of whatever type) !
