Using Wordpress to create a website not a blog.?
-
I'm struggling to understand how I can use Wordpress to create a website rather than a blog. I understand about creating a static homepage etc but my issue is this. If I create a 'Home' page layout in something like Photoshop and export it as HTML/CSS this will be different to the look and layout of the rest of the Wordpress site. I assume that I would have to also create different versions of the layout for any other pages I wish to create in my site. For example if I wanted the following pages: 'About Us', 'Contact Us', 'Services' would I have to create separate layouts for each of those?? If so I assume these would also be static, if I'm creating static pages how will I be able to make use of the plugins available to Wordpress if the pages are not dynamic? And also If I wish to use a blog later on how will I be able to change the look of that so that it looks like the static pages I have create in Photoshop? I hope this makes sense, I'm sure I'm over complicationg things as everywhere I read people say Wordpress is so easy!! Thanks in advance.

Answer:
Mark, In WordPress the look and feel of the entire Site is defined by the Theme; All Pages and Posts therefore have the same font, colours etc. etc. All content in WordPress is added via the text editor (a GUI) therefore it is very unlikely that any HTML knowledge is required. I recommend installing WordPress and playing with it because I think you are overcomplicating things by talking about Photoshop, HTML, CSS etc.

You are; sort of ... what you need to be creating is a WordPress theme; not static html pages - You're going in the right direction; just not all the way.. You can take those html files, and turn it into a theme so it will hook into the backend and you can edit the stuff that's being output by the database. Hi Mark, You have complete control of the system once you discover how to modify the theme page templates. You can have multiple page templates within a theme you develop if you decide you want them to be different. You will need to use CSS, PHP and XHTML to get the look you want. Wordpress works against you when you decide not to use its plumbing; but, it's amazing what you can do when you play along.

Sorry to say this but it really is simple. I am not a web developer by long stretch of the imagination, but I was able to develop www.krouse.co.uk using wordpress and it was pretty straight forward. Download and install wordpress, find a theme that is "roughly" the right sort of style you want then starting playing in the admin panel with some of the features, it takes a little getting used to but is better than starting from scratch in notepad.
