    RSS stands for "Really Simple Syndication" .it used by website to put the modification of the content of their site. here the scenario : you want to have the headline news on a widget in windows vista or on your own website ,you have to use that news website RSS feed to synchronize your widget news with latest news.i mean this RSS feed/file is really simple :p its written in XML (Extensible Markup Language) so downloading that content usually take less time than downloading the whole news page with lots of redundant information . isn't it ? another scenario :you really curious about some thread in a forum so you want to follow second by second the latest posts by users so instead of keeping your browser open which consumes lots of memory and cpu time you can just give that forum's RSS feed/link to a "RSS reader application" (you can find lots of these programs on net just google it) and that programs shows you the latest updates of that page in an informative way like playing a sound or poping a window to attract your attention. i hope this helps :)
