Moving from blogger to own domain AND use wordpress?

  • hi there!! i currently have a blog on blogger.com. i am considering moving to wordpress but want my own domain. i'm so confused by all of it -- is moving from blogger to wordpress a lateral move? do i get my own host & domain first? or transfer from blogger to wordpress and THEN get my own domain? i was told that wordpress is just a software and doesn't host any webspace -- if that's true, then how do people have their blogs on it? so confused! please help! i know this is easier than i am making it seem. :)

    1). If you want to have your own domain, then you need to use wordpress.org. 2). I guess moving from blogger to your own wordpress.org site is a wise move, because you will "own" your blog. Means you can control your blog 100% without any worries of other parties to suspend you or similar. 3). If you use wordpress.org yes, you need your own webhost and domain. If you use wordpress.com it's free. But you can't have your own domain, example your url will be: yourdomain.wordpress.com 4) transfer from blogger to wordpress and THEN get my own domain? == No, first, you have to have a domain and webhosting first before transfering. 5). Wordpress.org is a free blogging software, and you NEED webspace to install it. People who have blogs in it, are people who have their own webhost and their own domain name. I would install wordpress locally in your computer first to be familiar with wordpress.org software. If you like it, then you can start look for webhost and a domain name.

A domain name is a name you want to call your website (ex: www.yahoo.com). To get a domain name, you have to pay an annual fee to a registrar for the right to use that name. 2- Buy a web hosting service to provide your online space and enable you to get your blog online at your purchased domain name. If you’re going to start your blog at your own domain with different pages, you need a web host providing wordpress. It can be confusing. There's WordPress the software and wordpress.com. WordPress has a good article on the difference between the two here: http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/ In short, however, Wordpress.com hosts blogs. You can get one there for free. You won't get your own domain but you will get a subdomain (like "myblog.wordpress.com"). One nice thing about blogging at wordpress.com is they keep the software up to date, plus you don't have to pay hosting or domain registration fees. At wordpress.com you can also import your Blogger content straight into your new WordPress blog. You're limited to the themes they provide and you can't upload plugins but it's a good way to go. You can also get a domain, find a webhost, install the WordPress software, configure it, then import your Blogger content. It sounds like a lot of work but it's really not that bad. If you want to host your own blog I recommend GoDaddy hosting. They've automated the installation and upgrade process for WordPress (and other software) and it's reasonably priced.
