I do have a Macbook, but I am wondering because I am going to be taking graphic design courses that are taught with PC programs. If I choose to use a Mac, I would have to buy the applications which are quite a chunk of change. Thanks!

  • Answer:

I am completely negative on laptops for media content creation. The portables have OS features to prolong the battery life by powering down the hard drive and CPU, which is what you DON'T want when creating music, video or transmitting large files over a network. Plus, the only upgrade for portables is usually a USB add-on. If you are worried about software costs, consider Linux. I have a factory custom-built tower box with AMD64 Bulldozer 8-core, nVidia GeForce 7300 GT, gig of RAM and I replaced the Power Supply Unit to 550 watt to accommodate 7 USB and 2 digital sound ports. You already have a portable in the Mac. But, it's up to you. Also, please consider attending the art school first to get a feel of what hardware they are using. Believe you me, there will be a lot of pirated software floating around at the school.

You can technically use any computer to do graphic design. However, macs would be my recommendation in the long run, but if you were not going to use it for just graphics, then I would recommend getting a windows computer.
