How can i improve my Home Page Design/Blog Page Design (Pics Inside)?

I am entering a contest (design your own website template form a portfolio), and I just completed the home page, and the Blog main page, and wanted to get your opinions on them (whats good, things I could change & add, etc). Well I'm impressed. What I suggest you do is increase the height of the blue shim so that it ends with the 'Whats New' blue background.
