How do you buy back a domain name?
-
I would like to know more about the behind the scenes of having a web-site. I am comfortable using web-desing software and designing static web-sites. I am helping a small non-profit reestablish their website. The domain name is owned by the company that previously hosted the website. I would like to buy the name but use another company to host. How do I do this? I guess I don't really understand the who how and why of purchasing/owning a domain name.

Answer:
You cannot purchace a domain that is owned by another person. You have to negotiate with that person for the transfer of the domain to you. Furthermore, some webhosts do not allow the transfer process to be easy to discourage it.

If someone knows that you want to buy a domain name they'll hold you to ransom for it. Your best chance is to register a similar name. I am a pro Web developer and I use www.godaddy.com for registering domain names. They have software that will generate similar names to the one that you want.

Contact the webhosting service the non-profit were using and ask them if they would kindly transfer the name over to you for free or at cost (they have to pay a yearly renewal fee for the domain to the domain registry and might ask for back payments). If they indicate a willingness to go ahead and transfer the name - then go to a domain registrar (NOT another web host) and create an account and through that account initiate the transfer request process. This is usually very easy to do. Once you have the domain transferred and registered to you at a domain registrar that gives you full domain management control, you can host your domain/website wherever you like and change your webhost whenever you wish.

A domain name is required if you want people to go to a specific site. hostgator.com is a domain name. Anyone that puts it into the address bar of a browser will go to hostgator. It needs to be purchased and registered. Records are kept of who owns the domain. Don’t trust any cheap service, many of them don’t allow you to have full control on your domain name. If you are going to create your website: 1- Buy a domain name. To get a domain name, you have to pay an annual fee to a registrar for the right to use that name. 2- Buy a web hosting service to provide your online space and enable you to get your website online at your purchased domain name.
