How to use the blackberry messenger in your blackberry smartphone?

my friend and i just got blackberrys! we wanted to learn how to use it! we add each other by using the blackberrys pin number, but we get "waiting for authorization" and nothing pops up or anything! how is this supposed to be done? does the service provider have anything to do with this? we are both using rogers!

Do you both have the BlackBerry data plan added to your account? If not, then BlackBerry Messenger won't work.
