How do I fix the wifi on my iTouch?

I have the correct password for my Wifi network- but Itouch says it wont connect.?

My mom just bought me this 1st generation itouch for christmas. It is not brand new. It is refurbished and very used. I have had a itouch before, and have used it with full wifi here in my house. The wifi connection was great on the old itouch i had, and my password worked. Now, on this itouch, I go to Settings, Wi-Fi, Wait for it to locate my network, which by the way, the connection is really low on this itouch? Once it finally locates it, I go to type in my password. I am 110% sure this password is correct.I type in, i press join, and it says -"Unable to join the network *Thompson6*"- then gives me the option to dismiss. Maybe I need to upgrade? Reset?- If this is needed to fix the problem, I will do it. But i dont want to lose all my apps and music i spent forever putting on the device. Maybe its a problem with the itouch?-Although I know the previous user was on youtube. ... dont understand why it does this. I have looked all over google, i cant seem to find my exact problem. My sister who has had an itouch too, couldnt figure it out. Please Please help me! Be detailed in your answers, as i am only 14 :) Thankyou!!! I appreciate any help.
