Can i change a regular phone into a smartphone? if i can how?

What smartphone and provider should I buy?

• I would like to change cellphone providers (I have AT&T and the coverage is terrible). I live in southeast Michigan. I am thinking about Verizon, since they have great coverage, but their plans are very expensive, especially with a smartphone. I am also thinking about MetroPCS, which is very cheap. My main concern is which phone to buy. I have been using a Palm device for 8 years, mainly because I use the organizer applications (Calendar, Contacts, To Do List/Tasks) all the time for my work and personal life. I need a smartphone that has good applications for these same features, and I need to be able to sync my information with my computer. I also need to import my data from these applications on my Palm to my new smartphone (I might be able to import all my data to Windows Outlook first, if that helps with the transfer of data). Since I have used Palm for so long, I am completely uninformed about the other brands of phones and don't know what to look for. What phone brands or what operating systems have good organizer applications that can sync with my computer and can have my existing data imported? I don't really care about all the other smartphone features and applications - things like surfing the web are nice, but are not what I am basing my decision on.

  Verizon is awesome ! And I have the blackberry curve 8530 and I recomend it to everyone its an awesome phone and plan
