How to make iPhone battery last longer?

My iPhone 3GS 8GB battery dies FAST! I've read on the Internet on things you can turn off to make it last longer. So far, I've turned off WIFI, the 3G, Bluetooth, my Yahoo! Account is inactive, I have brightness set on auto, I dont use iPod EQ or shuffle and I rarely call people. And even when I'm not using it, the battery still dies. It hasn't lasted for even a simple 24 hours. And I've only had it for a week. Can anyone help?!?!

you've had it for a week? new? then that's definitely an issue with the battery that you need to tell Apple about--they'll probably be cool if you tell them the situation and could possibly give you another one. but if you got it used off of someone, then there's not really anything you can do about it; the battery's just not holding the charge since it's old.
