Im trying to put apps on my itouch but it wont let me?

i got my friends old itouch and i just downloaded a free app from the itunes store but when i click and drag it over my itouch it doesnt let me put in on my itouch theres a 3.1 Software Update and mine is 1.1.5 if i download this new update will i be able to put apps on my itouch?
