What is data im so confused...Im new to the android thing..does wifi go agianst data plan?

Ok well lets say I got a new Phone and it was an Android. Im new to the whole android thing.. so i kept getting messages to my phone saying.."you used this much data 20% 60% etc. and im just soooo confused about data what is it? Can someone help me? OH and does wifi go against data? that the main question that i wanted to ask. I need to know this so my mom wont be upset because she gotta pay alot of money. So please someone tell if wifi does or does not go agaisnt data. This will so help thanks!:)

no by using wifi your mobile operator won't charge you wifi is free ( it is only available until u r in wifi range)
