What is the difference between buying a cell phone at AT&T compared to at Best Buy, for the same phone?

  • I want to buy the Pantech Ease from AT&T since my contract is about to expire and I am eligible for an upgrade. So, my local best buy store has the pantech ease for 29.99. Compared to my local AT&T Store that has it for 69.99.. Just wondering what the difference is.. and why best buy can sell it at half the price?

    There is no difference in Warranty whether you buy it from AT&T, Best Buy, CheapCellphones.Com or LetsTalk. The Warranty is a manufacturer warranty. Service issues with phones purchased thru Authorized AT&T dealers, such as the above, works the same. Online you will get phone for free. AT&T pays all of them a commission to sell you the phone. Its all AT&T product backed by AT&T. Difference is Best Buy and ATT Stores have higher overhead so they charge you more. Onloine is way to go... worry free guarantees as well.

typically that price at Best Buy is for starting a new service. Also, AT&T will not necessarily cover any issues with the phones performance on the network if not purchased through them.

The difference? You're buying through Best Buy and not AT&T. When you buy it from Best Buy, there's a different warranty with it than the AT&T version of the same phone. I honestly have no idea why the prices are different... I think Best Buy makes money off of a different system than AT&T does. There's really not much of a difference, just the support you get for it.

Nothing is different except the price of the handset. Best Buy (and the other authorized retailers) choose to make little or money on the sale of the handset in order to entice people to do their upgrades with them.
